These embryos could be graupel particles, frozen ra indrops or even liquid drops, as long as they a re of the right size in the right location. For convenience, they are assumed to be ice pa rticles in the calculations. Their shape could be spheroidal (including spherical) or conical. ) Calculations have only been made for spheroidal hailstones, but the effect of a conical shape is discussed. Jryos is thought to be so small that they are not detectable by radar. AI though it has been assumed that these embryos exist throughout the WER, this is not necessary to produce large hail.

E. Case 4: The storm of 27 June 1967 The storm history Each of the storms considered in Sections 3b-3d exhibited a well-defined WER and a radar reflectivity structure which implied a quasi-steady airflow for periods of 20 min to an hour. The storm of 27 June 1967 did not exhibit these characteristics, and yet it persisted as a radar-identifiable storm for close to 3 hr and produced hail as large as walnut size. Fig. 45 shows the maximum Ze envelope for this storm and the accompanying hail reports.
