She hated hearing the echo of Rafe’s words from her friend. “This is so not helping me feel better,” she said and tossed her spoon onto the glass tabletop. Shaking her head, Dani laid a hand on Cynthia’s shoulder. “I’m sorry. I hate seeing you in pain and I think a lot of that pain has to do with them and now with Rafe. ” Maybe because she was troubled about the argument with Rafe and maybe even feeling like a bit of a coward, Cynthia thought but didn’t say. A city supposedly inhabited by a demon goddess who had taken away and killed nearly half a dozen of his men. Cordero had decided after the incident that no amount of lucre was worth their lives and had chosen to leave the area in search of a safer existence. Cynthia and her team members would venture into that area in the morning, hopefully with a better outcome than that of Rafe’s team. They had planned more cautiously and with safety in mind given the disappearance of their colleagues. Maybe even possibly due to Cordero’s admonishments about the demon. Part of that prudent preparation included taking additional satellite phones together with a compact shortwave radio in case of any emergencies.
