Griep described Rohrbach’s labours as “vergebliche Wissenschaft” (scholarship to no avail), because although Rohrbach had made it his life’s work to prepare a book on Varenius, his labour of love tragically never saw the light of publication; only a few articles made it into print. His collection now at Eutin is, however, of the Àrst importance to Varenius scholars. This renewed examination of Varenius’ works and re-evaluation of his achievements brings to mind what Hanno Beck wrote in 1982 when he called Varenius “deÀnitely the greatest geographer since antiquity”.
Among David Chytraeus’ most important students was the younger Johannes Freder, who was his friend’s son, and he educated him in his own house. Freder eventually became his successor, and also his son-in-law, when he married his daughter Margareta in 1573. Freder accompanied Chytraeus on his many travels. In the year before his marriage into the Chytraeus family he became a professor at Rostock University, where he then served as rector several times and edited the papers of his father-in-law.
