In this chapter, the current knowledge of the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in the induction, development and maintenance of the BBB is summarized.

As we now know, the microvasculature is not uniformly tight throughout the brain, but is a composite building that contains segments of leakiness integrated into the mass of tight vessels. e. neurohaemal regions which entail neurosecretory and neurosensory areas for controlling specific parameters of the body fluid.
